Stress and Our Profession

Normally fire fighters at Blacksburg fire department are training every Thursday doing some kind of physical skill or task. This past Thursday gave personnel invaluable training on post-incident care of themselves and their fellow firefighters.

Heating System Check

As we head into the cooler months, we will begin using our heating systems. Before using them for the winter, make sure they are clean and in good working order.

HVAC systems and other "heat pumps" should be ran on approximately 75 degrees for an hour during the day while you're home. This will burn off any dust or other particles that may be in your system.

Structure fire

October 07

On 10/3/2019 at approximately 3:40pm, units were dispatched to the 500 block of S. Rutherford St. for a report of a structure fire. On arrival, units encountered heavy fire and smoke conditions. The fire was declared under control within 30 minutes of arrival.

While the home was severely damaged, the occupants were able to escape the home with no injuries reported.

Fire Safety is Everyone's Business!

According to the Office of the State Fire Marshal, there have been 45 fire related deaths in South Carolina this year. Of these, 88% of fatalities occurred in a fire in their home. 13% were multiple fatality fires. 62% of fire victims so far this year were male.

The top listed causes of fires were, in order:

1. Smoking (16 deaths)
2. Electrical (5 deaths)
3. Undetermined (5 deaths)

Blacksburg and Eastside Fire Departments battled a early morning mobile home fire on the 400 block of E. Lime Street. CKC, Buffalo, and Antioch Fire Departments assisted with manpower and water supply. No one was hurt or injured on scene.... (Full Story & Photos)

Head-on collision with Injuries

At about 4:15pm, crews were dispatched to the 800 block of Blacksburg Highway in reference to a two vehicle collision.

On arrival, two drivers of each respective vehicle were confirmed entrapped with moderate injuries. After approximately 20 minutes, both drivers were extricated.

Spartanburg Regional One and GHS helicopter crews transported both parties to Spartanburg Medical Center.

We are approaching that time of year; opening windows, decluttering from another winter, and welcoming the spring with open arms. With this "spring cleaning" comes many fire hazards that people may often overlook.

Odor of Gas at Hardee's

February 12

At approximately 7:06am, Blacksburg units were dispatched to 914 N. Mountain Street in reference to an odor of gas. On arrival, units inspected a gas-powered grill in the kitchen area that had residual gas odor around it. Units cut off gas at the main valve just behind the grill. At approximately 9:48am, units were dispatched to reports of a vehicle fire involving an electrical wheelchair. On arrival, the wheelchair was noted emitting smoke and fire. The occupant was located approximately 10 feet from the wheelchair on the ground. The occupant stated he did not suffer any injury and declined medical treatment. Fuel Spill assist with Buffalo VFD

At approximately 9:30, Blacksburg hazmat was requested to respond to a spill involving an 18 wheeler at the highway 18 and highway 5 intersection in rural Blacksburg.

On arrival, UN placards indicated the product in the trailer was a Class 8, or, corrosive product. Units dammed the runoff and provided defensive hazmat operations.
